Obituary

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Bruno Mariano Suppa on February 18, 2020. Predeceased by his beloved wife Matilde Romeo (August 19, 2013). Cherished father of Elisa (Kostas), Adriana, Stefania (Federico). Proud uncle of his nephew and nieces, and deeply loved nonno of Georgios, Matteo and Mia. Forever remembered by his brothers Domenic (Rose), Frank (Jane), and Piero (Jennifer) and their families. A dedicated family man with a commitment to community and volunteerism – someone who loved travel, his hometown and a good card game.

Born on May 30, 1934, in Vallelonga Italy, Bruno arrived to Toronto at the age of 14. With no social supports and not speaking the language, he began working at this young age to afford the .50 cent English classes offered by his neighbour. These early experiences adapting to a new life left an indelible mark, one that would influence his work and life for years to come. He pursued an education, completing an undergraduate degree while studying at night and working a full-time job, and would complete a Masters Degree in the same manner. His experiences shaped a deep commitment to helping newcomers and included a 50+ year involvement with COSTI, as well as volunteer roles with the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation Board, the National Congress of Italian Canadians, Villa Charities and the Precious Blood Fathers in supporting special projects in Tanzania. Bruno’s commitment to community also extended to his professional life.

He served as a Judge of the Immigration Appeal Board and Judge of the Court of Canadian Citizenship. He also worked as a Trustee for the Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board), and went on to serve as its Chair. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations to www.costi.org are preferred.

My deepest condolences to Bruno's family. It was heartbreaking to hear of his passing. Bruno was like a big brother to me ever since we met in 1974. During the 20 years that I spent on the COSTI board with him he always had my back. He was a leader but, was always humble enough to allow others to shine. After I left we continued to be in touch. I will always remember when I was asked to run for Member of Parliament, I wasn't sure I wanted to do it. So, I called Bruno (who called Lino Magagna) and asked him to come for coffee so I could get his opinion. During the discussion he said, "You have no choice, you have to run". To which Lino said, "Yes, I agree with Bruno, we have no one up there now that understands our issues, so you have to run". He was always direct. I loved him dearly and even though we did not see each other often, he was always there. He will be missed very much. Rest in Peace Bruno.
